Studies show that supplementation plays a critical role in addressing vitamin B12 deficiency in people who are unable to absorb it efficiently from food. In a review of 1–3 months of clinical studies on people with pernicious anemia, researchers concluded that supplementing with 1000 mcg of vitamin B12 per day was an effective dose for normalizing vitamin B12 levels (Chan et al., 2016).

Not all forms of vitamin B12 are absorbed and used by the body equally (Paul & Brady, 2017). Unlike the synthetic form of vitamin B12 known as cyanocobalamin, the methylcobalamin form of vitamin B12 is already in its biologically active form and does not rely on conversion by the liver. Once absorbed, methylcobalamin offers a directly usable form of vitamin B12 to facilitate various essential physiological functions, including in people with impaired cobalamin metabolism (Paul & Brady, 2017).

Even people without malabsorption issues may be challenged with absorbing vitamin B12 through their gastrointestinal tract when supplemented at high doses. This is because the intrinsic factor needed for vitamin B12 absorption and conversion becomes more easily saturated at higher concentrations (Temova Rakuša et al., 2023). Although intramuscular injections are a common therapy for vitamin B12 deficiency, studies show that sublingual tablets are a more effective way to replenish the body’s levels. In a nine-month study, researchers found that patients who received vitamin B12 therapy in the form of sublingual supplements experienced a 13% greater improvement in vitamin B12 levels than patients receiving an equivalent dose through intramuscular injections (Bensky et al., 2019). Sublingual tablets help absorb vitamin B12 directly into the bloodstream through the capillaries in the mouth lining and avoid the need for intestinal absorption (Bensky et al., 2019).

Vitamin B12 is a crucial nutrient that we rely on for essential bodilyprocesses. However, when malabsorption issues or other factors impair vitamin B12 metabolism, supplementing with methylcobalamin in a sublingual form can help compensate for common barriers that affect absorption and use by the body.
